LIVING SPRINGS CAMP 2012

All we can say is what an AMAZING experience for everyone!!!!!  A huge thank you to Living Springs for allowing us to spend 3 days at their fantastic camp and to their staff for organising such fun-filled activities for us to be involved in.  A great time was had by all!!

UMS students, we were so proud of your outstanding attitude and enthusiasm towards the different activities you were involved in.  We were so pleased to see you giving everything a go with a "can do" attitude.

Parent helpers, we would once again like to express our gratitude to you for making the camp such a success.  The experience would not have been the same without your help and support!!!

Some more things of interest from Room 15

These activities are from Term 2 but we all wanted to share them with you.

Our first photo is of our team challenge. We broke into small groups with some pasta and marsh mellows .
Each teams goal was to build the highest tower using these two materials.
We first discussed what shapes were strong and looked at ways of supporting the builder rather than working as a group of individuals.

Lots of discussion came from this activity and many ideas were tried and tested. We had lots of fun and even sampled how the towers tasted afterwards.

The winning team of Ethan Nuttall, Lucy McGowan Moore and Ethan Howse

We were also  focusing on procedural writing throughout term two. We decided to create kite kit sets for the junior class of Room 3. These kit sets included procedural writing that would instruct the juniors how to make them.

We loved making and testing the kites and many smiles and giggles were shared.

Here are some photos of some students testing their kites.

Here is the link if you would like to make one at home. They fly well and are easy to make with minimal materials needed.http://www.instructables.com/id/Easy-Paper-Kite-for-Kids/

Art work inspired by Henri Matisse.

Room 15 have recently been painting with scissors!
This is an art form created by French artist Henri Matisse when he was too unwell to paint.
We have looked at abstract form and have enjoyed creating a message through our work.

Here are some of the artists at work.

Welcome back to Term 3!!  We trust that you all had a very relaxing holiday and are looking forward to the fun-filled term ahead.  Some of the highlights for this term will be:

  • Winter Sports Tournament at Hagley Park on Tuesday, 24 July from 10am to 1pm.
  • Friday winter sport, both school-based and at Hagley Park.
  • Camp at Living Springs on 15-17 August.
  • Learning all about the Olympic Games and putting on our "creative hats" as we work together to design/create Olympic torches, medals, mascots, uniforms, merchandise, a venue/site etc.
The Living Springs Camp will be a great opportunity for students to get to know one another and to work co-operatively with students from across the syndicate.  We have no doubt that this will be a most enjoyable experience for all students!

Let the count-down begin!

Science in the Upper Middle Syndicate

The students in the Upper Middle Syndicate are having a great time carrying out experiments involving some kind of chemical reaction.  It has been great hearing the discussion amongst the students as they share their predictions and talk about the results that occur!!
